Project type: Resource recovery & circular economy
Located in Jubail — the heart of Saudi Arabia's industrial coast — this project tackles one of desalination's most stubborn challenges: what to do with the concentrated brine left behind after seawater RO. Instead of discharging it back to the Arabian Gulf, we put it to work.
The Innovation: Concentrated RO reject brine, rich in salinity and minerals, is fed directly into a hybrid microalgae cultivation system combining open raceway ponds and tubular photobioreactors. We selected halotolerant strains (such as Dunaliella salina and Spirulina-class species) specifically suited to the high-salinity, high-temperature, high-irradiance conditions of the eastern province.
The Cycle: Seawater RO → freshwater (to industrial use) → brine concentrate (to algae cultivation) → CO₂ uptake from co-located industrial flue gas → harvested biomass (β-carotene, omega-3 lipids, animal feed protein, biofuel feedstock) → polished effluent.
Outcomes: Brine discharge to the Gulf substantially reduced · CO₂ sequestered from neighboring industrial operations · high-value biomass products generated from a former waste stream · a working showcase for Saudi Vision 2030's circular carbon economy ambitions.
