Brine Mining at Haql

Brine Mining at Haql****Brine Mining from Seawater Desalination Brine — Haql, Saudi Arabia

Project type: Resource recovery & critical minerals · NEOM region

On the Red Sea coast at Haql — gateway to the NEOM development zone — we deployed an integrated brine mining facility that transforms seawater desalination reject brine from environmental liability into commercial asset. The Red Sea contains some of the highest salinities in the world, making it ideal for selective mineral recovery.

The Process Train: Concentrated SWRO brine → nanofiltration for divalent/monovalent ion separation → mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) evaporation → fractional crystallization → drying and packaging.

Recovered Products: Sodium chloride (NaCl) for industrial and de-icing markets · magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) for refractories, environmental remediation, and pharmaceutical-grade magnesia · potassium chloride (KCl) for fertilizer and industrial use · lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) for battery manufacturing — supporting the Kingdom's battery and EV ambitions · bromides (Br⁻) for flame retardants and oil & gas additives.

Why It Matters: Saudi Arabia is among the world's largest producers of desalinated water, generating millions of cubic meters of brine daily. By converting that brine into critical minerals — including battery-grade lithium — this project advances Vision 2030's mining sector goals, reduces marine discharge impacts, and positions the Kingdom in the global supply chain for energy transition materials.
